End of File Corruption Errors

Submitted by:  William W Conway

In the event of a file corruption error occurring in MicroStation, the software provides an "End of file missing...attempt repair?" message dialogue box when re-opening the compromised file. Allowing MicroStation to 'attempt repair' often exacerbates the problem rather than fixes it. Bentley Systems provide the EdG tool to repair damaged files

If you receive the 'end of file missing' message, DO NOT OPEN THE FILE! If you have other users in your office who are unfamiliar with the message, set up an 'end of file' message using the MS_NOEOF_MSGFILE variable which can be set-up under Workspace > Configuration.

Create a simple text file using WordPad or PFE and save it with a .txt extension. Adjust the variable to locate this 'warning' file in the end of an EOF message. Mine reads like this:

"Warning!
Do not open this file!
Contact Cartography Administrator immediately.
No, you are not in trouble..."

This will prevent a lot of needless file repairs and give you the EdG option. However, if you really want to provide 'file corruption insurance,' buy a copy of ADS's 'BackIt' for each and every installation of MicroStation
