Active depth and Display depth

3D depends on active depth and display depth to control the elements that you can manipulate and view. Both of these commands can be set using the 3D view toolbox, but you can also set these commands using the key ins az= and dd= respectively. The active depth is the plane in a 3D view that you want elements to be placed at.

One trap is that active depth works in the view that you set it in, and only in that view. So, if you have two views open and you set the display depth in the first, the second view does not recognize the new setting until you define active depth in that view. If you do not define the active depth in the second view and you start placing elements in that view you are likely placing the elements at a different elevation.

You may notice that sometimes elements do not show up or only partly display in one of the views. In cases like this, make sure that the display depth is set to a large enough range to view elements in all planes. A quick way to do this is to make sure that when you do a fit view that you have the option set to Expand Clipping Planes. Note this will recalculate the views display depth.
