There's a temporary and "smart" solution to turning off indexing, available through the shortcut <L> ("Lock Index"). This one is a little hard to explain and takes a couple minutes to get used to, but I think you'll like it. It allows you to move the cursor to any position to determine whether or not the X, Y and/or distance is indexed (i.e., on the "sweetspot"), and locks that state until you give a datapoint or press L again. So if you want to place a really short line, move the cursor a bit further than you want to go (so it doesn't snap into the sweetspot), then press L, then move it back in and it wont stick. It's pretty powerful (and very quick!) because it will allow you to lock to, say, the X axis without locking to the Y (you can do any combination of the 3 locks).
