You can use modify element, make sure you snap to the same vertex twice and then reset so the shape is not altered in appearance. The setting "minimize number of linear elements" in the drop down from the tool settings should be checked.
NOTE this will only work if the complex shape contains lines or linestrings, not arcs or curves.
